ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported 2,459 new COVID-19 cases while 73 more people died of coronavirus in the country during the last twenty-four hours.
According to the latest statistics from the National Command and Control Centre, , the total number of cases has reached 440,797 cases so far ever since the pandemic began earlier this year while the death toll has reached 8,905. .
There are still 48,008 active cases in the country while 2,456 people are in critical condition. More than 386,333 people have recovered from the virus including 1,614 in the last 24 hours.
The province of Sindh has the highest number of cases. There have been 196,962 cases recorded so far and 3,164 deaths. There are still 25,589 active cases in the province.
Punjab has recorded 128,138 cases and 3,422 deaths while there are still 9,418 people suffering from the disease. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded 52,787 cases, 1,477 deaths with 4,960 active cases, while Balochistan has 17,711 cases, 191 deaths and 1,238 active cases.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Health Services Dr Faisal Sultan lauded the media for spreading awareness about COVID-19.
Addressing the participants of an online workshop for journalists on COVID-19, he apprised the meeting about the challenges posed by the virus and the measures taken by the government to curb the second wave of the pandemic.
The Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination revealed that the government had allowed the private sector to purchase the coronavirus vaccine.
“Private sector has also been given permission by government to cater for that segment of society which can afford,” the official statement of the health ministry read suggesting that the COVID-19 vaccine will make its way on to the private sector as well.
Health experts said that enabling the private sector to acquire the vaccine also indicated that people might be able to buy doses before the government rollout.
