KARACHI: PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari today (Tuesday) has asserted that the top officials of Sindh police were wondering ‘who were the people who surrounded’ the IG Sindh house at 2am and took him to an unspecified location before the arrest of PML-N leader Capt Safdar.

Bilawal called an important press conference after several high ranking officers of Sindh Police, including IG Sindh Mushtaq Mahar, requested to proceed on leave after Capt Safdar arrest.

The officials include the Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi, the AIG Special Branch, and several Deputy Inspectors General (DIG) of police.

Bilawal also demanded to know the identities of the two people who went inside the IG’s house and where they allegedly took the police chief at around 4am.

“Whatever happened to PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz and Capt Safdar is extremely shameful,” he said, adding, “I cannot show my face at how this happened in my province.”

In this regard, the PPP chairman asked Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Bajwa and DG ISI Lt Gen Faiz Hameed to hold an inquiry Captain Safdar’s arrest.

He also pointed out that Prime Minister Imran Khan and PTI workers had also resorted to sloganeering at the Quaid’s mausoleum in the past. “Even banned outfits had visited the Quaid’s mausoleum and chanted slogans,” he added.

The PPP chairman also said that he wanted the Sindh Police to function independently. “We don’t want political interference in our police but that also doesn’t mean any other institution interfere in their matters,” he added.

Following the arrest of Capt Safdar, a voice message by PML-N leader Muhammad Zubair was shared in which he alleged that the IG Sindh was kidnapped and forced to register an FIR against Maryam Nawaz, her husband Safdar and 200 others for violating the sanctity of the Quaid’s mausoleum.

Muhammad Zubair claimed that Sindh Chief Minister confirmed to him that police was pressured into making the arrest. “When police refused to do that, Rangers kidnapped the IGP,” Zubair alleged.

On the other hand, PML-N vice president Maryam also claimed the IG Sindh Mushtaq Mehr was forcibly taken to the sector commander’s office and asked to issue arrest orders.
