MEXICO CITY: Newborn triplets have reportedly tested positive for novel coronavirus in Mexico on the day they were born.
The case has become the youngest infections in the country, medical experts are investigating whether the newborns were infected before or after birth.
A health official stated that it appeared unlikely the administrator could have contracted a virus outside the womb so quickly.
The triplets include two boys and a girl. As per reports, one boy, and a baby girl, are in a stable condition in a hospital while the second boy is being treated for a respiratory condition.
A spokesperson for the state’s Health Safety Committee said contagion in multiple births had not been detected anywhere globally and so the case would be investigated.
The parents of the newborns are being tested for the virus with authorities saying they may have been asymptomatic.
It is not the first time newborns have tested positive for the virus, but it is rare. Children statistically suffer far fewer symptoms from COVID-19 infection than adults, and the impact on human health appears to increase with age.
Nationwide, Mexico’s confirmed coronavirus cases rose by 4,577 to 185,122, and the confirmed death toll rose by 759 to 22,584. The first case in the country surfaced on 28th February.
