Prime Minister of Sudan Abdalla Hamdok has escaped an assassination attempt today (Monday) in an attack on his convey in the capital, Khartoum, confirmed his top aide.
Prime Minister’s office director, Ali Bakhit said, “An explosion hit as Prime Minister’s car was driving by but thank God no one was hurt.”
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the incident. The area was quickly cordoned off by the police.
Footage and images on state television showed that at least two vehicles were damaged at the site of the blast in Kober district.
State-run radio Omdurman meanwhile reported that automatic weapons were also used in the attack and that Hamdok was taken “to a hospital”.
Hamdok was appointed prime minister in August last year after pro-democracy protests forced the military to remove former ruler Omar al-Bashir.
