RIYADH: The Saudi-led military coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthi rebels has claimed that it successfully intercepted and destroyed a suspected drone in the sensitive Makkah region of Saudi Arabia.
According to a report by Agence France-Presse (AFP), coalition spokesperson Brigadier General Turki Al-Maliki confirmed the operation in a statement posted on social media.

He said the air defence systems detected a drone in the airspace over Makkah and destroyed it before it could reach its intended target.
However, the coalition spokesperson did not disclose where the drone had been launched from or identify the group or party allegedly responsible for the incident.
Saudi Arabia has faced various aerial attacks and drone-related operations in recent times. The latest incident in the Makkah region is being viewed as another development in a series of such security-related incidents.
Authorities have yet to release further details or evidence regarding the drone’s intended target, flight path or the motives behind the alleged operation.
