A newlywed woman was killed and her husband critically injured when unidentified armed men opened fire on the couple in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Hadeed area on Wednesday, police said. A third man accompanying them was also wounded.
According to police, a court in Thatta district had directed authorities to provide security to the couple, who lived in Dhabeji. Police escorted them to the Karachi boundary before leaving them to continue their journey.
CCTV footage from the National Highway toll plaza showed a police vehicle accompanying the couple before the Thatta police team returned.
Shortly afterward, armed men travelling in a white vehicle allegedly opened fire on them.

The woman, identified as Fatima, was killed, while her husband Akbar and their friend Umer sustained bullet injuries.
Police said Fatima was shot twice, while Akbar suffered six bullet wounds. Umer was also hit by a bullet but was reportedly out of danger.
Police said the couple had been traveling on a motorcycle with Umer after appearing in court. The attackers fled towards Thatta following the shooting.
Steel Town police later conducted a raid in Thatta and arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the attack. Further investigation is underway.
