LAHORE: The Punjab Education Department and district administration have launched a province-wide crackdown on unregistered tuition centres and academies, with 760 such facilities in Lahore set to be sealed starting Friday, following the deaths of 14 children in the Kahna roof collapse earlier this week.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar announced the decision while speaking to reporters, stating that all tuition centres and academies operating across the province would be closed with immediate effect.
“760 tuition centres in Lahore are being sealed from today,” he said. “Most educational institutions in Punjab are not registered. Going forward, only those academies and tuition centres that possess valid fitness certificates will be allowed to operate.”
The move, it may be added here, comes three days after the roof of a private tuition centre collapsed in Lahore’s Kahna area, killing 14 children who were studying there and injuring several others.
A day later, another roof collapse at a school in Baghbanpura left one child dead and multiple students injured.
In response to the back-to-back incidents, the provincial authorities began registration of private tuition centres in Lahore on Thursday. Officials said the registration process would be completed within three days.
According to media reports, the Education Department and local administration initiated the measures to prevent similar tragedies. Rana Sikandar said inspections would focus on structural safety, fire exits, and overall building fitness before any centre is permitted to reopen.
He added that the department had found widespread non-compliance, with a majority of academies operating without official registration or safety clearances.
