Impeachment trial: Bolton’s revelation puts Republicans under pressure

WASHINGTON: Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans in the U.S. Senate came under new pressure on Monday to require evidence and new records in his impeachment trial following a news report that a former top adviser, John Bolton, wrote a book manuscript criticizing Trump’s versions of events in the affair with Ukraine.

Republican Senator Mitt Romney, a longtime Trump opponent, said there was an increasing possibility that at least four Republican senators would vote to call on Bolton to appear in the case, which would allow Democrats the necessary votes to prosecute the former national security adviser.

So far, Senate Republicans have refused in the trial to allow any witnesses or new evidence to determine whether Trump is being removed from office. While on Monday afternoon, the president’s legal team is set to restart its defense of  Donald Trump.

Media reports claimed that Bolton’s secret book manuscript stated that Trump had told him that he intended to suspend Ukraine’s security assistance until Ukraine assisted with politically beneficial Democratic probes, including former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
