KARACHI: Heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms and hail hit several parts of Pakistan on Tuesday, affecting Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir, leaving at least three people dead and several others injured in weather-related incidents.
In Kandhkot and nearby areas, a lightning strike killed one person and injured three others, while in Rojhan, a powerful windstorm reportedly caused solar panels to be blown away, resulting in two deaths and one injury.
In Rahim Yar Khan’s Sadiqabad, stormy winds and heavy rainfall brought down trees, billboards, walls and electricity poles, injuring three people and disrupting daily life.
In Sindh’s Sukkur region, hail and rain brought relief from intense heat, but caused widespread disruption as windstorms damaged solar installations, signage and infrastructure in Kandhkot, Jacobabad, Thull and Ghotki areas. In Qubo Saeed Khan, hailstones reportedly reached egg size.
Several other districts including Mehar, Nasirabad and Dera Murad Jamali also experienced strong winds and rainfall, which turned the weather pleasant but caused scattered damage.
In Azad Kashmir, heavy rain was reported in Mirpur, Mangla and Islamgarh, while the hill stations of Abbottabad, Galiyat, Nathia Gali, Ayubia and Thandiani received continuous rainfall.
Windstorms also hit Wazirabad, where dust storms and rain disrupted normal life, while Peshawar and surrounding areas experienced strong winds that helped ease the heatwave conditions.
In Sukkur, the storm severely disrupted the power supply system. Electricity remained suspended in several areas even six hours after the rainfall, as 46 grid stations of the SEPCO region were affected. Multiple 132kV and 220kV transmission lines tripped, causing widespread outages.
According to a SEPCO spokesperson, transmission towers, poles and power lines suffered significant damage due to severe weather conditions. Restoration work is currently underway.
Meanwhile, rainfall activity continued in parts of the country, including Rawalpindi, Lahore and Faisalabad, where showers and thunderstorms were reported, with further rain expected in the next 24 hours.
Despite the widespread weather activity, Karachi remained hot and dry.
