SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: In yet another devastating incident that has further escalated tensions in the tribal belt, at least four children are reported to have lost their lives and 15 others injured following an alleged quadcopter drone strike in the Ghawakwa area of South Waziristan.

According to local sources and initial reports, the strike targeted a residential house, causing significant structural damage and immediate casualties. Among the 15 injured are several women and children, many of whom are reported to be in critical condition. Emergency responders and local residents acted swiftly to pull victims from the rubble, transferring all the injured to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.

The incident has sparked an immediate wave of grief and anger across the region.

This latest strike comes at a time of heightened sensitivity regarding aerial operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Only days ago, a high-level Loya Jirga (Grand Assembly) was convened at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar to address the surge in civilian casualties.

KP Loya Jirga refuses to accept civilian deaths in drone strikes as ‘mistakes’

During that assembly, tribal elders, scholars, and political representatives issued a stern warning against the continuing loss of innocent lives. The Jirga explicitly stated that the people of the merged districts would no longer accept civilian deaths in drone strikes as “mistakes” or “collateral damage.”

Observers say the Ghawakwa tragedy underscores the “double price” that residents of the former FATA regions say they are paying—caught between the resurgence of militancy and the heavy-handed nature of counter-terrorism operations. Analysts suggest that such incidents fuel a cycle of resentment, complicating efforts to achieve long-term stability in the border regions.
