LAHORE: The Punjab government has officially approved the design for the Gujranwala Mass Transit System, marking a major step forward in the province’s urban development.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired the decisive meeting in Lahore, where officials presented a detailed briefing on the project’s scope and technical requirements.
According to details available to media, the approved plan features a 31.5-kilometer corridor running from Ghakhar to Aimanabad, equipped with 24 stations capable of serving 2.6 million passengers. To tackle heavy traffic, the design includes two underground tunnel sections, with formal approval granted for 17 to 19 kilometers of subterranean track.
Chief Minister Nawaz emphasized the need for integrated connectivity, directing that feeder buses link every part of Gujranwala to the main metro line. The infrastructure plan also covers three new depots at Garjakh, Chan Da Qila, and Gondlanwala, a modern command and control center, and a 62-kilometer drainage system. Sustainability remains a priority, with solar panels slated for installation at all stations and depots.
“The completion of this project will transform the transport culture of Gujranwala and provide citizens with a modern and high-quality travel system,” Maryam Nawaz stated, highlighting the initiative’s potential to redefine urban mobility in the city.
