Why does UAE want to leave OPEC?

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has shocked the oil producing world by announcing that it will leave OPEC, indicating a shift in the global energy politics.

This move points to economic, strategic, and geopolitical goals which are parts of the Persian Gulf country’s long-term policy.

One of the main reasons is the UAE’s dissatisfaction with OPEC’s production quotas. These limits restrict how much oil member countries can produce, but the UAE wants to increase its output capacity, potentially up to 5 million barrels per day by 2027.

By leaving, it gains full control over production decisions and can respond more freely to market conditions.

Economic strategy is another key factor. Officials say the decision followed a “careful review” of national energy policy, with the aim of maximizing revenue and expanding investment in the oil sector.

Geopolitics also played a role. Tensions with Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s leading member, and disagreements over regional security issues have strained relations.

At the same time, the UAE is pursuing greater “strategic autonomy” and strengthening ties with partners like the United States.
