Open manholes in Karachi have become deadly traps and a symbol of fear for citizens, prompting authorities to launch a dedicated helpline for immediate assistance.
Karachi residents can now report open or missing manhole covers by calling helpline 1334, enabling the government to take swift action and improve public safety.
This step follows recent tragic incidents, including the death of a three-year-old child in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
The Sindh government, in collaboration with the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), has assured citizens that all complaints will be addressed promptly.
In 2024 alone, around 71,000 manhole covers were installed across Karachi, reflecting the administration’s efforts to protect lives.
According to official data, between October 23 and December 1, 2025, the city registered 1,543 complaints about missing manhole covers, of which 1,449 cases have already been resolved. North Nazimabad Town reported the highest number with 169 complaints, followed by New Karachi Town with 149, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town with 110.
Authorities urge citizens to immediately report any open or unsafe manhole to help prevent accidents.
Complaints have been received from all 25 towns of the city, highlighting the need for continuous monitoring and rapid response. The Water Board continues to supply manhole covers where needed and prioritizes repairs after every report.
Residents can call helpline 1334 to report missing or unsafe manhole covers in their area. The government says public safety remains its top priority and requests citizens to cooperate to avoid further tragedies.
