Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has announced the launch of the country’s first hyperspectral satellite (HS-1) on October 19 from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.
The satellite uses hyperspectral imaging technology, which captures hundreds of narrow light bands—far beyond the visible spectrum—allowing for highly detailed analysis of Earth’s surface. This enables advanced monitoring of agriculture, environment, urban growth, and natural disasters.
According to Suparco, HS-1 marks a milestone in Pakistan’s space program, providing high-resolution data for precision farming, including crop health, soil moisture, and irrigation patterns. It’s expected to boost yield estimates by 15–20%, supporting national food security.
The satellite’s sensors will also enhance disaster preparedness, enabling flood prediction, landslide tracking, and post-disaster assessments, especially in vulnerable areas like northern Pakistan and the Karakoram Highway. In urban development, HS-1 will support smart city planning through land-use mapping and infrastructure analysis.
HS-1 joins Pakistan’s growing remote sensing fleet, including PRSS-1, EO-1, and KS-1, aligning with Suparco’s Vision 2047 and the National Space Policy.
