WhatsApp is gearing up to launch a series of new features designed to help businesses generate revenue through the Meta-owned messaging platform.
Over the coming months, Meta plans to monetize the app’s “Updates” tab, currently used to follow posts from businesses, media outlets, and public figures. Central to this strategy is a new subscription model that will allow channel administrators to offer exclusive content to followers in exchange for a recurring monthly fee.
“This will enable channel owners to share exclusive, real-time updates with their most engaged followers—and earn revenue while doing so,” said Nikila Srinivasan, Meta’s Vice President of Product Management.
Although access to WhatsApp channels will remain free, admins will have the option to activate a subscription fee within a fixed price range, according to a Meta spokesperson.
In addition to subscriptions, channel owners will be able to increase their reach by promoting posts or running ads through Meta’s Ads Manager. Much like Facebook and Instagram, this tool lets businesses set ad budgets that align with their marketing goals.
Businesses are already turning to WhatsApp to strengthen customer service. A survey published in May revealed that major retail brands—such as John Lewis, Next, B&Q, and M&S—are increasingly using the platform, often incorporating chatbots, to enhance customer interaction and meet rising consumer expectations.
