Former federal minister and senator Abbas Afridi passed away on Friday after succumbing to severe burn injuries sustained in a gas leak explosion at his residence in Kohat.
The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Azam Bagh area, where a blast, initially believed to be caused by accumulated gas, critically injured Afridi and three others.
Police confirmed that the explosion was triggered by a gas buildup within the house. Afridi was promptly shifted to a burn center for treatment but could not recover from his injuries.
Three other individuals who were injured in the explosion remain under medical care.
Family members have announced that funeral prayers for the late senator will be held in Babri Banda, Kohat.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed deep sorrow over Afridi’s passing. In a message of condolence, he extended heartfelt sympathies to Afridi’s father, Senator Shamim Afridi, his brother Amjad Afridi, who serves as the provincial information secretary of the Pakistan Peoples Party, and other grieving family members. “We stand with the family during this time of profound loss,” the governor said.
