OpenAI, the company behind the popular artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, is set to establish the world’s largest data center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Initially, there were rumors about OpenAI expanding its Stargate data center project into the Middle East. The company has now officially confirmed these plans through a blog post, announcing Stargate UAE — a gigawatt-scale data center to be constructed in Abu Dhabi.
The project is expected to become significantly operational by 2026. OpenAI is partnering with G42, SoftBank, Oracle, Nvidia, and Cisco for this ambitious undertaking.
According to the company’s blog post, Stargate UAE will enable AI infrastructure and computing capabilities across a span of 2,000 miles.
OpenAI stated that this project is the first partnership under its “OpenAI for Countries” program, a global initiative launched in collaboration with the U.S. government to help nations establish sovereign AI infrastructure.
As per the company, this partnership will make the UAE the first country in its region to enable ChatGPT nationwide, offering widespread access to OpenAI’s technology.
The announcement of Stargate UAE comes shortly after Elon Musk revealed that his AI company, xAI, plans to build the world’s first gigawatt AI training facility.
