The Punjab government has launched the construction of a Tourism Corridor extending from Quaid-e-Azam Interchange to the Wagah Border along GT Road. The project includes the development of an expanded, carpeted road, a model structure fence, and modern stairs to enhance the area’s appeal and accessibility for tourists.
The Communication and Works Department of Punjab has already started the initial phase of the project, with an estimated cost of Rs 3.28 billion for its completion. The government allocated Rs 1 billion for the project in the current fiscal year’s budget, and discussions about the initiative were held during a recent Apex Committee meeting.
Work on GT Road is already underway, with plans to build aesthetically designed sidewalls along both sides of the road leading to the Wagah Border. These walls will also serve to highlight the cultural heritage of Lahore, adding to the region’s historical significance.
This Tourism Corridor will provide enhanced facilities for tourists, especially those arriving in Pakistan from India. Before this project, GT Road faced challenges due to encroachments and deteriorating infrastructure, which also posed security concerns. The new developments aim to improve both the safety and the overall experience for visitors.
