Pakistan Meteorological Department has said Karachi will face a relatively shorter winter season, where cold temperatures may begin mid-December.
The city is experiencing a strange heatwave with temperatures nearing 40°C, underlining a worrying sign of the impacts of climate change.
Experts believe that a milder winter is to be seen across Pakistan as a whole, and specifically in Karachi, where the delay further cements global climate shift impacts. It has, of course, also been very warm lately, increasing the demand for cold drinks and liquids among people. Most parts of the country are likely to witness dry conditions, while places like Lahore, Islamabad, and Gilgit-Baltistan might receive scattered rain and even light snow, as per PMD.
Meanwhile, Punjab’s provincial government has issued an emergency alert for Lahore, asking residents to take precautions against rising smog levels that pose significant health risks.
On Monday, Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) reached a hazardous 707, topping global pollution charts. Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb urged residents, especially vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with heart or respiratory issues, to wear masks outdoors and limit outdoor activities.
