The New Zealand cricket team won its first-ever ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title in 2024, defeating South Africa by 32 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
After falling short in the finals of the 2009 and 2010 editions, where they lost to England and Australia respectively, the Kiwis finally broke their title drought this year. South Africa, led by Laura Wolvaardt, had been runners-up in the previous edition but once again fell short, despite a strong start to their chase.
South Africa seemed on course for victory after reaching 51 without loss in pursuit of New Zealand’s 159-run target. However, their hopes were dashed as wickets tumbled rapidly following Tazmin Brits’ dismissal, sparking a collapse. Wolvaardt, who contributed 33 runs from 27 balls, was next to go, and only Chloe Tryon (14) and Annerie Dercksen (10) managed to reach double figures besides the two openers.
New Zealand’s bowlers shone in the second innings, restricting South Africa to 126 for 9. Amelia Kerr and Rosemary Mair were the standout performers, each taking three wickets, while Eden Carson, Fran Jones, and Brooke Halliday chipped in with one wicket apiece. The Black Caps’ victory was largely attributed to their exceptional bowling display.
Earlier in the match, South Africa had won the toss and opted to field. New Zealand posted a competitive 158 for 5, with key contributions from Suzie Bates (32 off 31), Kerr (43 off 38), and Halliday (38 off 28). Captain Sophie Devine, however, managed just six runs before being dismissed by Nadine de Klerk. Despite this, the Kiwis’ total proved more than enough to secure their historic triumph.
