A massive fire broke out in Karachi’s Shah Faisal Colony Number Three on Wednesday, claiming the life of one person. Rescue officials were able to bring the blaze under control within a few hours.
Sindh Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaan Khan credited the swift response of the rescue teams for containing the fire. The victim, identified as 55-year-old Sirajuddin, was pulled from the building but did not survive.
The fire reportedly began after an explosion in an oil and tyre shop, quickly spreading to neighboring shops and trapping people in a residential building. It was revealed that petrol was being sold illegally at the shop, and the fire was allegedly sparked by a cigarette thrown near the petrol.
SSP Memon mentioned that action had been taken against illegal petrol sales at this location in the past, with enforcement measures taken as recently as two months ago. The petrol worker had managed to obtain a court order allowing operations to continue.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
