Rupee drops in value against dollar in interbank trading

On Wednesday, the US dollar appreciated by 11 paisas against the Pakistani rupee, reaching a rate of Rs278.45. This increase in value comes at a time when the final approval of Pakistan’s much-anticipated $7 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) remains uncertain.

The IMF Executive Board’s schedule up to August 28 has been released, and Pakistan’s case has yet to be included in the board’s agenda. This omission raises concerns about the timeline for the disbursement of the loan. However, sources suggest that the Executive Board has the authority to add agenda items outside of the official schedule, providing some hope for an expedited process. This uncertainty follows the staff-level agreement between Pakistan and the IMF, signed on July 12.

In other economic news, recent data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) indicates a significant decline in consumer borrowing for vehicles, housing, and personal needs.

In July 2024, loans for vehicle purchases totaled Rs228 billion, reflecting a 20% decrease from Rs285 billion in July 2023. This reduction highlights the financial pressure on consumers amid rising inflation.

Similarly, borrowing for housing saw a decline. Loans for house purchases amounted to Rs203 billion in July 2024, a 4% drop from the previous year. Overall consumer financing, which includes various personal loans, fell by 6% year-on-year, with the total volume recorded at Rs802 billion in July 2024.
