Polish glider pilots Sebastian Kawa and Sebastian Kot Lampart have made history by flying over the summit of K2, the world’s second-highest peak at 8,611 meters above sea level. This marks the first time anyone has glided over this mountain, located on the border of Pakistan, India, and China.
They reached an altitude of nearly 9,000 meters using powerful wind currents and a phenomenon known as wave lift.
Kawa, a 24-time world championship medalist, highlighted the importance of natural forces, skills, and precise control in their achievement.
“We reached this altitude thanks to the forces of nature, our knowledge, and skills,” Kawa told Polish private broadcaster Polsat News.
“Even helicopters can’t reach their base if the mountain peaks are covered by clouds,” he said. “Our experience allows us to predict storm cloud developments and anticipate conditions above the summit. Precise glider control is essential, as any error can lead to a collision with the mountain slope.”
Kawa loves to glide, even though he is a qualified gynecologist. Being one of the most decorated athletes in gliding history, he has won 24 world championship medals, including 18 gold.
