A centuries-old shrine, the dargah of Imam Shah Baba on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, became the center of a tense situation late Thursday night. A group of individuals, identified as a Hindu mob, vandalized graves and installed idols within the shrine premises, sparking communal tensions in the area.
The attack, reportedly carried out by the mob, led to clashes and stone-pelting, prompting police intervention. As of now, authorities have detained 30 individuals in connection with the incident.
The graves, including those of Imam Shah and his family members, were demolished during the late-night attack, causing distress among Muslim residents of Pirana village, who rushed to the site upon learning of the desecration.
According to police statements, the dispute over the shrine involves members from both Hindu and Muslim communities. However, tensions escalated in the early hours of Friday as community members gathered at the site following the destruction of graves.
As clashes intensified, police personnel sustained injuries while attempting to control the situation. Despite assurances from law enforcement officials to address the grievances and restore the demolished graves, residents remain skeptical amid ongoing tensions.
Imam Shah Baba, a revered figure among Muslims, Hindus, and others, has been a symbol of communal harmony for centuries. However, the shrine has been embroiled in controversies and disputes, particularly since the Babri Masjid demolition, with attempts made to assert control and alter its historical significance.
