ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will on Wednesday (today) hold final consultations with allies and opposition leaders regarding the formation of a caretaker government.

The National Assembly all set to be dissolved at the stroke of midnight tonight (Wednesday), just days before completion of its constitutional tenure.

The prime minister confirmed that he would write to President Dr Arif Alvi today to bring an end to the incumbent government’s tenure and hand over the reins to the interim setup after completing constitutional norms.

The premier said after the dissolution of the assembly, the chief election commissioner was mandated to decide the future course of action regarding the elections. He added that all the parties were unanimous that elections should be held as soon as possible.

The prime minister will hold a meeting with the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Raja Riaz to fulfill his constitutional obligation on holding consultations regarding the appointment of an interim prime minister.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Raja Riaz said he has completed the consultation process with his allies and three names for the interim prime minister were almost finalised. The opposition leader would discuss the names with the prime minister.

Raja Riaz said that the names for the caretaker prime minister were finalised after he held meetings with lawmakers from the opposition. “He said the names do not include any politicians but an economist has been shortlisted.

The opposition leader said he could even consider a politician for the interim PM slot if suggested by the government. Riaz said elections should ideally be held within three months but the approval of the latest census has complicated the matters and polls can be delayed by six months.
