Prince Karim Aga Khan – The legend of Humanity

Ambassador Dr. Jamil by Ambassador Dr. Jamil
March 6, 2024

Prince Karim Aga Khan is a highly esteemed figure who has made significant contributions to humanity. As the spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslim community, he is globally recognized as a visionary leader. His ancestors have a long history of passion and generosity in creating an ecosystem for nurturing human index development chiefly in the field of education, health, and Islamic culture

While Prince Karim Aga Khan, who is commonly referred to as The Aga Khan, comes from a distinguished line of ancestors who were known for their contributions to the well-being and welfare services to society at large. The Aga khan has taken the legacy of his ancestors to new heights through his dynamic leadership. The Aga Khan’s vision for human development centers revolves around the belief that a healthy and educated society is key to sustainable progress. To achieve this goal, he founded the Aga Khan Foundation and Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a worldwide network of institutions and agencies dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in underprivileged communities in several countries.

A significant part of His Highness The Aga Khan’s focus has been on developing countries and their marginalized populations. He has implemented large-scale projects, which have helped to elevate poverty, improve education and health facilities, and promote economic development in underdeveloped regions of the world, with a special focus on a country like Pakistan. As a Captain in the Pakistan Army, I was posted in the remotest area of Hunza – a village known as MARKHOON where even oxygen was low, but AKDN school was functional. Beyond this village, even the oxygen became so low that birds could not breathe and thus could not fly beyond Markhoon village at the height of above 13000 feet. However, due to the initiative and the vision of the Aga Khan, the AKDN changed the lives of the people as back as 1977 by establishing schools. Today, Markhoon, the last limit of human dwelling in Pakistan, has 95 percent of its population educated rendering serves at the national level.

In addition to focusing on development work, the Aga Khan is also committed to promoting understanding and awareness of Islam and its heritage. He believes that Islam is a religion of peace and compassion and has established several institutions to remove negative perceptions and misconceptions of Islam in the West through various initiatives.

It is worth mentioning that only a few Muslim countries have attempted to develop a mechanism to promote awareness about Islam as a peaceful religion. For instance, Imran Khan met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Kuala Lumpur, and some decisions were made during the meetings with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Muhammad, which have not yet been implemented. However, in this regard, the Aga Khan’s work started long ago that continues non-stop.

The Aga Khan established several agencies under the AKDN organization, which can be deemed as a miniature United Nations. These agencies besides other activities, work towards promoting cultural and religious understanding and preserving and promoting Islamic arts, including architecture. To this end, a museum for Islamic culture and values has been established in Canada, a country where such institutions are scarce.

The Aga Khan’s services in humanitarian and human development work are exemplary. His vision, which is employed in the work of AKDN, has had a significant impact on the lives of millions of people around the world. His focus on developing underdeveloped countries and their impoverished populations, as well as his efforts to promote awareness of Islam and its heritage, demonstrate his commitment to a better future for all.

Prince Karim Aga Khan’s ancestors played an active role in establishing Al-Azhar University in ancient Egypt, and later Prince Karim Aga Khan continued this legacy by spearheading cherished projects like Al-Azhar Park in Cairo, Egypt and Babur Gardens in Kabul, Afghanistan. Both neglected spaces were transformed into beautiful public spaces under the scheme. In addition, AKDN established the first microfinance bank in Afghanistan, offering financial services to small businesses and entrepreneurs.

AKDN established several institutions to promote pluralism and cultural understanding, such as the Global Center for Pluralism in Ottawa, Canada, and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada. The organization also focused on agriculture, resulting in the establishment of an agricultural cooperative in Tajikistan and a reforestation project in Afghanistan.

The Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance and the Aga Khan Foundation were established in Canada to support civil society. AKDN’s Extension Program for Water and Sanitation (AKAH) provided access to clean water and sanitation facilities in various cities of Pakistan, leading to better outcomes. Meanwhile, Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) is a healthcare provider network operating in more than 30 countries, with over 80 health facilities in Afghanistan and the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu, Kenya. AKDN also runs mobile health clinics and outreach services.

His Highness the Aga Khan’s contributions to education include the establishment of the Aga Khan Academy, which is a network of schools in several countries, and the Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), which is a network of over 300 schools and educational programs in more than 20 countries. Additionally, he established the Institute for Educational Development in Karachi and the University of Central Asia, with campuses in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan, providing high-quality education with a focus on critical thinking, cultural understanding, and ethics.

The Aga Khan Music Initiative supports traditional Islamic music and musicians in several countries, while AKDN’s early Childhood Development (ECD) centers provide quality care and education to young children. AKDN’s rural education development programs also offer resources and training to teachers in remote areas, and AKDN’s digital learning initiatives aim to increase access to education through technology.

His Highness the Aga Khan’s vision for human development and leadership of AKDN have had a profound impact on millions of people around the world, from healthcare and education to agriculture and cultural preservation. His legacy of humanitarian work and commitment to a better future for all will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.

If Pakistan adopts some of the models of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and its various institutions , it can set a good path for the country’s institutions that can benefit itself from the technologies that AKDN offers in various fields using modern methodology. Though Pakistan has already benefited significantly from AKDN’s work, even greater national advantage can be achieved.

The Aga Khan is a beacon of hope for underprivileged and disadvantaged people worldwide. His tireless efforts to improve the lives of those most in need are truly remarkable. He has dedicated his life to humanitarian work and his vision for a world where everyone has access to basic needs such as healthcare, education, and housing is truly inspiring. The Aga Khan’s unwavering commitment to promoting collectivism, tolerance, and respect for diversity has bridged the divide between different communities and united people from different cultures and backgrounds.

The Aga Khan’s leadership and guidance have been instrumental in solving some of the world’s most pressing problems, such as poverty, healthcare, and education. His welfare works have touched the lives of countless people, and his institutions have played a vital role in bringing about positive changes in various societies worldwide. The Aga Khan has also been instrumental in promoting economic development, and his efforts to promote sustainable economic development have been widely recognized.

The Aga Khan’s work has inspired people around the world, and his vision will continue to inspire future generations to work towards a more just and equal world for all. If Pakistan collaborates with Aga Khan’s tourism development vision and micro-financing scheme, it can not only increase Pakistan’s foreign exchange immediately but also strengthen small and medium-sized businesses through micro-financing, which is crucial for the growth and development of any country.
