A Bigg Boss contestant Umar Riaz has been called out by a contestant that he ‘looks like a terrorist’ (The Siasat Daily)

A Bigg Boss contestant Umar Riaz has been called out by another housemate Simba Nagpal that he ‘looks like a terrorist’ for wearing Kajal in his eyes.

Brutal attacks on Muslims in India have become routine in the country. At least six mosques and over a dozen houses and shops belonging to Muslims were burnt in the country. This might not be enough for the extremist so some of them have started the riot in the Indian film industry as well as one of the contests Umar Riaz faced a bigot attack by a fellow Hindu housemate.

Umar Riaz

Doctor by profession, Umar is the elder brother of Asim Riaz who is one of the most-loved BB contestants of all time. He has shown that he is quite a calm person and he has been entertaining the viewers with his unique antics.

He was born on January 1st, 1990, in Kashmir. He began his career as a doctor at Mumbai’s Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Center. He has dabbled in the entertainment sector in addition to practicing medicine. He has appeared in music videos alongside TV actress Dalljiet Kaur and Saba Khan, a Bigg Boss 12 contestant.

What happened?

It all started during one of the tasks in Bigg Boss 15 when Umar Riaz, an only Muslim contestant, was labeled as a terrorist by a fellow contestant named Simba who made controversial remarks against him.

Bigg Boss 15’s viewers were shocked to see Simba Nagpal push Umar Riaz violently into the pool. While Umar got saved as he fell straight into the water.  Luckily, he didn’t get injured as he fell into the pool straight, else he would have got a serious injury.

Another contestant Ieshaan Sehgaal, who was standing close to them, quickly rushed and condemned Simba and stated that he did the wrong thing. Apparently, Umar Riaz abused Simba Nagpal on his mother which angered the latter and he pushed him into the swimming pool.

Outrage on social media

Soon after this incident, trends like ‘Justice for Umar Riaz’, ‘Umar Riaz’, started to trend on both Pakistani and Indian Twitter after Simba called Umar ‘aatankwadi’. The show’s fans are demanding Simba’s eviction.

One of the users wrote, “If #UmarRiaz is told that he looks like ‘Atankvadi’ by his looks, whatever may be the intent, #SimbaNagpal needs to be taught a lesson! The guy may look innocent but needs to watch out for his words & be mindful of the sensitivity involved! @realumarriaz, stay strong buddy #BB15.”

I remember how one of the contestants was evicted last season for pushing someone into the pool! @BiggBoss @ColorsTV Waiting to see how your rules are gonna work this time.

Discrimination against Muslims isn’t new

Nearly 46 percent of Muslims are self-employed in urban India, the largest as compared with any other community, according to data from the government’s National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), 2013.

The report adds that Muslims are the poorest among all religious groups in India and are concentrated in low-paying jobs in the informal sector.  There is more, in October, the beheaded body of a 25-year-old Muslim man was found on a railway track in Karnataka’s Belagavi district. He had been killed for being in an interfaith relationship.

Such incidents are documented, broadcast, and streamed by the mainstream media.Even Indian governments has taken various legislative and other actions that have legitimized discrimination against religious minorities and enabled violent Hindu nationalism.

Is Indian land getting narrow for Muslims?

Such actions violate domestic law and India’s obligations under international human rights law that prohibit discrimination based on race, ethnicity, or religion, and require the governments to provide residents with equal protection of the law.
