NEW DELHI: Former Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid is likely to be appointed as the senior team’s head coach after the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indian media reported.
In a report published on Saturday, the Times of India (TOI) newspaper quoted an anonymous official at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as saying that the right-handed batter would be given a two-year contract.
According to the report, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah held a meeting with Dravid and persuaded him to become the head coach. The report also stated that Dravid’s former teammate Paras Mhambrey will join as the team’s bowling coach.
It has also been learned that Dravid’s will discontinue his stint as the head of the National Cricket Academy. No decision has been made regarding the replacement for fielding coach R Sridhar. Vikram Rathour will continue as the team’s batting coach.
Meanwhile, Former England captain Michael Vaughan on Saturday tweeted that “the rest of the world better beware” if reports of Dravid’s appointment were true.
Known as “Mr Dependable” or “The Wall” among Indian cricket fans, Rahul Dravid played 164 tests and 344 one-day internationals from 1996 to 2012. Currently the director of the National Cricket Academy, he is credited with mentoring many of the young cricketers in the current national team.
Dravid will take charge ahead of the New Zealand series after the T20 World Cup, the Times of India reported. Current coach Ravi Shastri last month signalled his intention to step down after the tournament, which starts on Sunday and runs until November 14.
