ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has approached Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking cancellation of bail given to PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz and her husband Capt (retd) Safdar in the Avenfield Apartment reference.

The anti-graft watchdog filed a petition under Article 199 on the “grounds of misuse of concession of bail, abuse of process of law, hampering administration of justice, resorting to unwarranted tactics, and harassment of NAB personnel.”

The bureau stated that Maryam Nawaz “deliberately and maliciously” misused the bail concession. Therefore, it pleaded with the court to rescind the bail of the PML-N leader and her husband.

A two-judge bench comprising Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Kiyani will take up appeals of Maryam and Safdar. The NAB petition will also come up for hearing tomorrow, the IHC registrar said.

Last week, Maryam Nawaz filed a separate petition in the Islamabad High Court, seeking the annulment of the verdict related to the Avenfield Apartments reference.

Maryam maintained in her petition that the verdict was a “classic example of outright violations of law and political engineering hitherto unheard of in the history of Pakistan.”

She added that the “Supreme Court supervised the entire process of the investigation of the case and monitored the prosecution.” She said filing three separate references in the case of assets is also a violation of the law and should be noticed by the accountability court.

On July 6, 2018, an accountability court had awarded 10 years of imprisonment along with an £8 million fine to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, seven years of imprisonment along with a penalty to Maryam, and one year of imprisonment to Captain Safdar in Avenfield properties reference.

Soon after the verdict Nawaz, Maryam, and Safdar had been released from the Adiyala Jail on September over the IHC’s orders for their release, nullifying the sentences awarded to them by an accountability court in the reference.
