As the world witnesses the Israel’s relentless air and ground offensive that has claimed over 37,400 lives in Gaza over the past eight months, an increasing number of people globally are opting to boycott pro-Israel companies and institutions.
The international Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement has long advocated for such boycotts, citing alleged involvement in Israeli regime war crimes, settler-colonialism, and apartheid against Palestinians. The ongoing Israeli genocidal war on Gaza has galvanized broader support for the movement, particularly in the Muslim world, prompting many young individuals to expand their boycott to include any companies expressing support for “Tel Aviv’s genocide in Gaza” on social media.
Assessing the effectiveness of this boycott remains to be seen, but historical examples suggest BDS campaigns can wield significant influence. According to a UN report, BDS was pivotal in a 46% decrease in foreign direct investment into Israel from 2013 to 2014. Moreover, prominent European corporations like Veolia, Orange, and CRH have withdrawn from the Israeli market following extensive campaigns highlighting their alleged complicity in Israeli violations.
