The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved financing of $400 million, which will be used for water, sanitation, and basic hygiene projects in Punjab. The funds will also help improve the institutional and financial performance of local urban administrations.
According to a statement, the Punjab Inclusive Cities Program (PICP) will support the improvement and rehabilitation of water supply networks, sewage systems, and wastewater treatment plants, provide stormwater drainage, and enhance the capacity of local governments so they can sustainably deliver services and increase revenues in 16 secondary cities across Punjab.
The program will also assist in improving the performance of the solid waste management system in Punjab.
World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, Bolormaa Amgaabazar, said that reducing stunting among children is essential for Pakistan’s future. Through the Punjab Inclusive Cities Program, we are investing in safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services to break the cycle of malnutrition and disease that prevents many children from reaching their full potential.
She added that with the support of the Punjab government, this program is an important step toward improving urban infrastructure and strengthening local institutions, laying the foundation for healthier communities and a more prosperous Pakistan.
The Punjab Inclusive Cities Program aims to provide improved water, sanitation, hygiene, and drainage services to approximately 4.5 million people and to deliver solid waste management services to an additional 2 million people.
