A news item is circulating on social media, particularly on whats app regarding a public holiday on 14 February for Shab-e-Barat, however, this is false information as the government of Pakistan did not announce any public holiday.
In the past, Pakistan never observed a public holiday on this day, however, the Sindh government announces a holiday for students on this day every year. This year too, the provincial government has announced a holiday for both private and public educational institutions in the province on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat.
According to a notification issued by the Sindh Education Department, all educational institutions, both public and private, will remain closed on Friday, February 14, to mark the religious event.

Shab-e-Barat, also known as the “Night of Fortune and Forgiveness,” is observed by Muslims with religious devotion. It is observed on the 15th night of Sha’ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. In Pakistan Muslims spend the night in prayer, seeking blessings and forgiveness from Allah, and visit graveyards to pray for deceased loved ones.
