Will PTI file FIR against PM Shehbaz Sharif over protester deaths?

The leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-Insaaf (PTI) is set to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior members of the coalition government, accusing them of the “killing of several party supporters” during recent protests in Islamabad.

During a press conference in Peshawar, PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram asserted that the government is attempting to hide the truth, claiming that anyone who tries to reveal the facts is being arrested. He announced that the party would specifically target PM Shehbaz, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar in their legal actions concerning the deaths of protesters.

This announcement follows a significant crackdown by law enforcement that reportedly led to the arrest of nearly 1,000 PTI workers during a late-night operation aimed at dispersing crowds gathered in Islamabad’s D-Chowk. The protesters were rallying for the release of party founder Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year. Akram emphasized that PTI’s legal teams are working to assist those who were arrested, insisting they are peaceful demonstrators rather than terrorists.

Akram criticized the government for allegedly denying the reality of the situation, claiming they possess video evidence showing the number of bullets fired during the protests. He stated that at least 12 individuals were killed on-site, with their bodies not returned to their families. Furthermore, he accused the current administration of pressuring Polyclinic Hospital in Islamabad to suppress information regarding the deceased and injured protesters, alleging that many PTI supporters are still unaccounted for in police custody.
