Why did Ahsan Iqbal pay for Toshakhan gifts taken in 2017 only now?

Federal Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqabl has submitted money on Tuesday for Toshakhan gifts he had taken home in 2017.

Earlier, the federal government has made the 466-page record of Toshakhana (gift depository) from 2002 to 2023 public by uploading it on the official website of the Cabinet Division which revealed numerous presidents, PMs and ministers received Toshakhana gifts.

“There was nothing unlawful done but for the sake of dispelling any misgiving I have paid back the total value of the gifts which I retained,” Ahsan Iqabl tweeted on Tuesday, revealing that he just paid money for two Rolex watches and carpet worth millions which he had taken home in October 2017.

Reacting to Ahsan Iqabl’s claims, former KP finance minister Taimur Khan Jhagra said “Funny, how he never thought of repayment while he crying hoarse, “Ghari Chor”. Ahsan sb, did you declare these in your statement of assets?”

Journalist Alina Shigri tweeted “Why do I have the feeling you would not have given this amount back if the details had not surfaced.”

Another journalist Cyril Almeida said “IK is one lucky dude… PMLN clowns have managed to turn the toshakhana into a spectacular own goal.”

Journalist Ahmed Noorani reminded the federal minister that he should have revealed these facts before accusing Imran Khan of wrongdoings regarding Toshakhana gifts.

Another journalist Khawar Ghumman said that one Imran Khan’s watch exposed so many people’s toshakhana watches.
