If you google the Iron Lady of Pakistan then you will certainly read Muniba Mazari Baloch. However, social media users have chosen a new Iron Lady for the country and she is non-other than Dr. Yasmin Rashid.
Since morning, Dr. Yasmin Rashid has been trending on social media and the question still remains why?
Dr. Yasmin Rashid
Dr. Yasmin Rashid joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2010. In 2018, she was inducted into the provincial Punjab cabinet of Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar and was appointed as Provincial Minister of Punjab for primary and secondary healthcare, with the additional ministerial portfolio of specialised healthcare and medical education.
Current fiasco
It all started yesterday when tensions between PTI workers and police flared in Lahore, when Dr Yasmin Rashid was stopped by law enforcement personnel who attacked her vehicle and attempted to detain her.
The Punjab Police resorted to tear gas shelling at her. Moreover, they attacked her vehicle, breaking the windshield.
What happened actually?
Dr Yasmin Rashid was heading to Batti Chowk when she had an argument with policemen deployed to block the party workers from leaving the city. Police personnel told the PTI leader that she can not go but she did not pay any heed and continued to drive ahead. At this, the police resorted to baton charge and broke the vehicle’s windscreen. However, she managed to make her way.
Dr. Yasmin and public sympathy
The video of Dr. Yasmin being brutally attacked became viral on social media in no time. The video, which went viral on social media, received harsh criticism from the general public that claimed the police were using unnecessary force to impede the march.
New ‘Iron Lady’ of Pakistan
Social media users since then have been praising Dr Yasmin Rashid for taking a strong stance and not surrendering to the unlawful use of force by the police. With the hashtag ‘Iron Lady’ trending on Twitter since morning, the public and social media users have been applauding her ‘bravery’ in light of what many are deeming to be acts of ‘police brutality’.
