MQM-P Leads Karachi’s National Assembly Seats with 17 Out of 22; Provisional Results Revealed
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has emerged as the front-runner in the race for National Assembly seats in Karachi, securing a commanding 17 out of the total 22 seats, as per provisional results announced by the country’s electoral authority. In contrast, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) managed to clinch only seven seats.
The significance of these seats in the lower house of Pakistan’s Parliament becomes evident in the event of parties failing to achieve a simple majority.
Elections were held for 265 seats in the National Assembly on February 8, with a political party needing 134 seats for a simple majority.
Given Karachi’s pivotal role in Pakistan’s economy, every government endeavors to gain control over the city. In this endeavor, the MQM-P has been a key player in the formation of a coalition government at the federal level, earning the moniker of a “kingmaker party” among analysts.
Despite independent candidates outnumbering political parties, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) emerged as the single largest party in the elections. Consequently, efforts have begun to forge alliances, including with the winning party in Karachi.
