Islamabad has been sealed off at 24 key points starting Saturday, with containers and barricades set up across the city. This move has caused major disruptions for residents and commuters, as authorities enforce strict security measures ahead of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) protest scheduled for November 24 (Sunday).
The following roads are blocked:
- Rawat T-Chowk
- Iran Avenue
- Chungi No. 26
- Khanna Pul
- Faizabad
- Murree Road
- Expressway
- Ninth Avenue
- Jinnah Avenue
In addition, containers have been placed at D-Chowk, Serena Chowk, and Marriott Chowk, further limiting movement within the capital.
The closures have led to heavy traffic congestion, with many commuters forced to take long detours or remain stranded. Public transport services are also disrupted, worsening the situation for daily wage workers and office-goers. Notably, the Metro Bus service between IJP Road and Pakistan Secretariat has been suspended for two days. While the Rawalpindi service, running from Saddar Station to Faizabad, will continue today, it will be completely suspended tomorrow in both cities.
The roadblocks are being implemented in light of a diplomatic visit by the President of Belarus, who is expected in Islamabad on Monday. Security measures are heightened to ensure the safety of the capital during these important events.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Police Lines to review the security arrangements. He stressed the need to maintain order, stating, “We must secure Islamabad at all costs.” Naqvi ordered the police to arrest anyone attempting to disturb the peace and directed officers to wear helmets and protective gear while on duty. He reassured the public that strict measures would be in place to safeguard citizens during the ongoing unrest.
