Shab-e-Barat is believed to be a night of divine mercy and forgiveness, during which Allah (SWT) grants repentance to Muslims, forgives their sins, and answers their prayers. It is believed that on this night, Allah (SWT) determines the fate of all living beings for the coming year. This belief encourages Muslims to engage in worship, seek forgiveness, and offer supplications.
Many Muslims observe this night by increasing their prayers and supplications, while some also choose to fast during the day to seek additional blessings. In Pakistan, Shab-e-Barat in 2025 will begin on the evening of February 13, 2025.
Origin of the Phrase “Shab-e-Barat”
The term “Shab-e-Barat” comes from Persian and is commonly used in Urdu and Bengali. It translates to “Mid-Shaban Forgiveness.” The phrase originates from the Arabic words bara’ah (meaning “freedom” or “innocence”) and shab (meaning “night”). The name of the Islamic month Shaban is derived from these words.
In Arabic, this night is known by several names, including Laylat al-Bara’ah (“The Night of Freedom,” referring to freedom from sins) and Nisf Shaban (meaning “Mid-Shaban” or “Half of Shaban”).
Why is Shab-e-Barat considered a sacred night?
Muslims believe that on this night, Allah (SWT) descends to the lowest heaven and grants forgiveness to those who sincerely repent. It is also believed that He determines the destinies of all creatures for the following year. Those who engage in prayers and seek forgiveness may receive divine blessings and mercy in the year ahead.
