The high-profile Matt Gaetz sex scandal is a case against Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz and in this case, he is facing allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor. The controversy centers around claims that Gaetz had sexual relations with a 17-year-old girl, which has led to ongoing legal and ethical investigations against him.
In March 2021, the New York Times broke the story that Gaetz was being investigated by the U.S. Justice Department over allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and paid for her travel.
Sealed testimony from three witnesses in the case reportedly alleges Matt Gaetz attended a 2017 party that included sex, drugs, and a nude, underaged girl.
Gaetz has vehemently denied the allegations, and the DOJ ultimately declined to file any criminal charges against the congressman. Still, the allegations – which did lead to a conviction and 11-year prison sentence for Gaetz’s friend and political ally Joel Greenberg – have dogged Gaetz and prompted an investigation by the U.S. House Ethics Committee.
Recently, Gaetz was subpoenaed to testify in a civil lawsuit filed by his former associate, Chris Dorworth, against the young woman who has accused him. This lawsuit alleges that she falsely implicated both men in a sex trafficking scandal. Gaetz’s deposition is scheduled for April 5, where he may be questioned about the allegations under oath. New court filings have surfaced claiming that Gaetz attended a drug-fueled sex party in 2017 where an underage girl was present.
The House Ethics Committee is actively reviewing multiple allegations against Gaetz, including sexual misconduct and drug use. Although the Justice Department concluded its investigation without filing charges against him, the Ethics Committee continues to explore whether he engaged in illegal activities or obstructed justice.
