Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has issued a stern warning to the government, threatening to initiate a civil disobedience movement if the administration fails to provide affordable electricity to the public.
Speaking to the media outside the Governor House in Karachi, where the JI’s sit-in protest entered its second day, Rehman outlined the potential course of action but did not specify the exact nature of the planned civil disobedience.
Civil disobedience, as defined, involves the active and often nonviolent refusal to comply with certain laws or government directives. Historically, it can include various forms of resistance such as peaceful protests, non-payment of taxes or utility charges, and other acts of defiance against government policies.
In his address, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman warned that if the government fails to meet JI’s demands, the party might organize similar sit-ins in other major cities including Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta. He emphasized that the youth of the country are placing their hopes on this movement and vowed not to disappoint them. “You just cannot stop our movement,” Rehman declared, directing his remarks at the government.
Rehman also criticized the government’s fiscal policies, questioning why the wealthy and influential are not taxed more heavily, instead of placing the tax burden on the salaried class. He accused the PPP government in Sindh of failing to make any positive changes over the past 16 years, alleging that it has only contributed to the deterioration of institutions.
