In the first ODI of the series, played on Thursday at the National Bank Stadium (NBS) in Karachi, captain Hayley Matthews’ outstanding century led the West Indies women to a 113-run victory over the host, Pakistan.
Thanks to Matthews’ 140 runs in 150 balls after winning the toss, West Indies scored 269/8 in the allotted 50 overs. She hit 15 fours and one six throughout her inning.
This was her fifth career century in 81 matches and came from 125 balls with nine fours and a six. She had earlier reached her half-century from 57 balls with six fours and a six.
With the score at one run in the third over of the match, Windies lost opener Rashada Williams (1). She then joined Shemaine Campbelle in adding 102 runs in 127 balls for the second wicket.
With 71 runs off 45 balls, Campbelle was the second-highest scorer, followed by Chinelle Henry’s 23 runs off of balls.
Sadia Iqbal and Tuba Hassan each took two wickets for Pakistan.
In their turn at the wicket, Pakistan Women were left chasing the game from the very start when they plummeted to 65 for four, which soon became 100 for six. They were eventually dismissed for 156, thanks to 23-ball 25 by Tuba Hassan.
