KARACHI: The temperature in Karachi dropped further as parts of the port city received heavy winter showers on Saturday night.
North Karachi, Surjani Town, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Orangi Town, Bahria Town, Saddar, North Nazimabad, Tower, Liaquatabad, and Nazimabad were among the places that had heavy rain.
A breakdown in the energy supply caused North Nazimabad and its surrounding suburbs to go dark after the intense downpour.
Additionally, clouds have also poured over Karachi, Bahadurabad and Super Highway.
The rainfall exacerbated the challenges for Karachi commuters, once again laying bare the vulnerabilities of the city’s sewerage system. Commuters encountered difficulties as streets, including MA Jinnah Road and I.I. Chundrigar Road, were inundated with a mixture of accumulated water and sewage overflowing from clogged lines.
Simultaneously, K-Electric, the sole electricity distributor in the city, issued a cautionary advisory to residents, urging them to prioritize safety during the rainy season. The power utility advised citizens to steer clear of damaged wires, TV and internet cables, electric poles, and PMTs due to the potential risk of electrocution.
In an earlier announcement today, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) highlighted the influence of a westerly wave affecting various parts of the country, with a likelihood of persisting over the upper regions on Sunday. The Met Office predicted rain, thunderstorms, and mountain snowfall in Balochistan, Sindh, Punjab, Potohar region, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit Baltistan (GB), and Kashmir.
The PMD forecasted isolated heavy snowfall in northeast and southern Balochistan during this period. On a prior occasion, the Met Office had anticipated substantial rainfall in Karachi on February 3 and 4.
