With Ramadan just around the corner, sugar prices in Pakistan have surged by Rs15 to Rs20 per kilogram in several cities, sparking concern among citizens and traders. To address this, the federal government has announced a Rs20 per kilogram subsidy on sugar prices nationwide for the holy month.
As a result, sugar will be available at a fixed price of Rs130 per kilogram in all four provinces. The Ministry of Industry and Production has communicated with the chief secretaries of each province and the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association to maintain this price during Ramadan.
Consumers can purchase sugar at this subsidized rate from model bazaars, which will be set up specifically for Ramadan. The sale of subsidized sugar will begin three days before Ramadan and continue until the 27th of the month.

In recent weeks, sugar prices, which usually hover around Rs130 per kilogram, have risen to Rs150 to Rs155 across the country. Similarly, the price of a 50kg bag of sugar has increased from Rs6,750 to Rs7,200. Shopkeepers attribute the price instability to sugar mill owners, accusing them of manipulating prices at their discretion.
