Following another sudden power breakdown at Dhabeji Pumping Station, all the station’s feeders were shut down, halting water supply to Karachi, according to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC).
The corporation’s spokesperson reported that the sudden back pressure led to a rupture in a 72-inch pipeline, specifically pipeline number 5, which supplies water to the city. This breakdown has resulted in the suspension of over 18 million gallons of water.
The Waterboard explained that the rupture was due to increased back pressure. Repair work is expected to take 24 to 36 hours, during which Karachi may experience significant water shortages. Authorities are actively working to restore supply and repair the damaged pipeline.
Earlier, on September 30, Karachi faced a shortage of 104 MGD of water due to similar breakdowns. The affected areas included the 72-inch PRRC line (line number two) and line number five of the MS system, along with the third-phase manifold, with ongoing repairs for these lines.
