The Constitution of Pakistan, 1973, upholds the fundamental right to personal dignity, recognizing it as an essential aspect of human rights. It provides a legal framework to protect individuals against actions that may violate their inherent dignity, emphasizing the state’s responsibility to ensure an environment free from exploitation, discrimination, and abuse. These constitutional provisions form the foundation for promoting respect and equality for all citizens, particularly addressing societal challenges related to harassment and misconduct in public and private spaces.
To further reinforce these protections, the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010 (Act IV of 2010), was introduced. This landmark legislation aims to create a safe and inclusive work environment by establishing mechanisms to prevent and address harassment cases effectively. It mandates the establishment of inquiry committees in workplaces, sets out penalties for offenders, and offers safeguards for victims to report harassment without fear of retaliation. The Act underscores the importance of equal treatment for all, ensuring that the workplace remains a space of mutual respect, free from inhumane or degrading behavior, irrespective of gender.
