The University of Karachi (KU) has introduced new dress code guidelines for its students, prohibiting casual or indecent clothing on campus. The new regulations, which aim to foster a respectful and modest atmosphere, came into effect following a notification issued by the university administration earlier this week.
According to the guidelines, students are now required to wear clean, modest clothing that aligns with the academic environment. The dress code explicitly bans see-through dresses, shorts, sleeveless or tight-fitting outfits, and clothing featuring inappropriate language or graphics. Violators of the dress code will face disciplinary action.
The move is part of KU’s broader effort to maintain discipline and uphold a respectful environment for its 45,000-strong student body. The university, one of the largest public institutions in the country, emphasized that the dress code is not only a matter of personal appearance but also of fostering a professional atmosphere conducive to learning.
A spokesperson for the university explained that the dress code was designed to ensure students “understand the expectations of behavior and attire on campus,” adding that it reflects the institution’s commitment to creating an academic space where everyone feels respected and focused on their studies.
The introduction of the new dress code has sparked mixed reactions from students. Some have expressed support, believing that it will help uphold a sense of discipline, while others have raised concerns about the restrictions on personal expression.
The university’s administration has clarified that the dress code applies to all students, regardless of gender, and emphasized that it is not intended to restrict individual freedoms but rather to maintain a professional, respectful academic environment.
