U.S. Army Chief Randy George ousted amid Iran war shake‑up

WASHINGTON: U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has dismissed Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, forcing his immediate retirement effective Thursday, in the latest shake‑up of the Pentagon’s top brass during ongoing U.S. military operations against Iran.

George, the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army, had held the post since August 2023. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the exit, thanking George for his service but offering no specific reason beyond the need for “new leadership during the conflict.”

Hegseth, who personally called George to request his retirement, said it was “time for a leadership change in the Army” as the administration seeks commanders aligned with President Donald Trump’s wartime strategy. The move comes nearly five weeks into joint U.S.-Israeli operations against Iran.

George, appointed under the Biden administration, had steered the Army through a major recruiting crisis in 2024. However, western media reports suggested that tensions reportedly mounted over his push for rapid acquisition of low‑cost drones and attritable systems, a procurement stance shaped by lessons from Ukraine that clashed with Hegseth’s modernization priorities.

Analysts note the dismissal underscores escalating hostility between Hegseth and senior Army leadership.

Since taking office last year, Hegseth has removed more than a dozen generals and admirals, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. CQ Brown and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti, in what observers describe as a sweeping wartime purge of the military’s upper ranks.

Officials stressed George’s departure was not linked to a recent helicopter disciplinary controversy. Instead, the shake‑up reflects the administration’s drive to install commanders viewed as fully loyal to Trump’s wartime agenda.
