Two young children from a Pakistani family have tragically lost their lives in the devastating flash floods that struck Valencia, Spain this week. The family belongs to Wahari, Punjab.
The victims, a 3-and-a-half-year-old girl, and her 6-year-old brother, were swept away by the floodwaters. Their bodies were recovered by emergency rescue teams, and authorities will conduct DNA tests before releasing the remains to the family.
The deaths were confirmed by the Pakistani Embassy in Spain, which shared the news on its official Facebook page. The embassy expressed its condolences and confirmed that it had been in contact with the grieving family. The post added that, out of respect for the family’s privacy, no further details would be shared at this time.
In addition to the Pakistani children’s deaths, the flood also claimed the lives of a British couple, Terry and Don Turner, who had been living in the small village of Piedralba, near Valencia. The couple, who moved to Spain from the UK a decade ago, were reportedly swept away while in their rural home. Their bodies were discovered in their car on November 2 by their daughter, Ruth O’Loughlin, from Brentwood, Staffordshire.
Ruth described her parents’ love for Spain, noting that they had been drawn to the country’s warm climate after moving from the often cold and rainy UK. The couple’s deaths have left the local community in shock. The bodies of the Turners were found alongside that of a Spanish man who also perished in the floods.
In response to the widespread devastation caused by the floods, the Spanish Prime Minister declared a three-day national mourning period. The government has also expressed concerns that more casualties may be reported as floodwaters continue to recede.
