KARACHI: At least two people died and five others sustained injuries when a gas pipeline exploded inside a shop in Khameeso Goth in New Karachi on Thursday night.
Police and rescue teams rushed to the spot on the report of the blast at Bashir Chowk in Khameeso Goth. Rescue officials have informed that two bodies and three injured people were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Police said the blast took place due to a cylinder explosion, however, after investigation, it came to light that gas had filled inside the pipeline which caused the blast. “A shop was badly damaged in the explosion,” Central district’s SSP Ghulam Murtaza Tabassum said.
“The shop was built on a nullah, and we believe the blast took place inside the nullah because of gas,” the police official said. The blast caused power outages in the area, which severely hampered rescue efforts.
