KARACHI: Videos of a lion in dreadful conditions at the Karachi Zoo have sparked furor and outrage on Twitter, with social media users calling to shut down the zoo ‘immediately’.
According to a private media outlet, a contractor responsible for providing food to animals at Karachi Zoo has barred all supplies over lack of payment from the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC).
The media outlet, while quoting sources, reported that the contractor is refusing to provide food items to the administration of Karachi Zoo citing a lack of payment from the municipal authorities.
The sources have claimed that KMC’s finance department has not cleared bills of the contractor since February this year and the contractor today pasted a notice at the zoo that he would not be providing the food anymore.
After the videos of the lion went viral, Pakistani Twitterati has called upon the authorities concerned to take strict action against the zoo administration or “shut the Karachi zoo immediately.”
In a video posted by journalist Quatrina Hosain, a lion can be seen in a miserable condition. She tagged the City Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab in her post, asking him to take the action against those responsible.
@murtazawahab1 are you taking action? Top priority is to bring in food and independent vets. I urge you to call Dr Shalla, Dr Isma and others to immediately check ALL the animals. And FEED all the animals according to their dietary needs. AND SACK THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS

The Karachi Zoo should immediately shut down
The administration have no shame.
Is this how we treat the caged animals? #KarachiZoo fails to pay food suppliers

This is heartbreaking”
Govt should invest in relocating these animals in their natural habitat, like what is happening in Africa, or in North America- Locking them up in a cage and let them survive in a controlled environment that is appalling to say the least us criminal.
